Name Game

Well we seem to be struggling to come up with a name we all agree on for this little one! My daughter for some time has wanted a baby brother/ sister,( preferably sister) and wanted to name them Olivia and Harrison which I like, but Olivia is a very common name. So here is where the problem begins. I wanted to name her Lavinia Ann (after my two grandmothers) but call her Livi; my hubby isn't sold on the name but he really really likes Livi as does my son. Here is where I have conflicts, too be honest I am not completely sold on the name just because I am afraid that our baby won't like her name when she grows up because it is unusual and old fashioned ( and my daughter complains about her name all the time, saying it is too long, she doesn't like it and why did we name her that?! Which I know can be a common thing, because apparently I did the same thing, wanting to be called Cindy!LOL!). The other issue I have is our first child our daughter we named just because we liked the two names, we had her first name picked out well before we knew we would have a daughter; our son is named after my father and great-grandmother (yes great-grandmother!) so if we name this little one after family will my first daughter feel slighted?! I know, can you tell I am a worrier???  So with all this conflict we have been trying to come up with some other names we can all agree on (one thing is either the first or middle name has to be biblical- something we want and have used with our other two), I like Hannah Kate but my husband isn't sold on it either, he likes Emma, which is okay but again popular. Last night we were sitting at the dinner table discussing names, when we asked the kids to vote only once on one of the names- Emma or Hannah; when my daughter broke down in a complete crying fit because she wants her sister to be named Olivia! UGH!!! I feel horrible, and torn, yet I don't want her to have the final say etc... what is a mom to do. We really would like to name the baby soon, so we can start calling her that instead of baby girl.
On a funny note about names my daughter (yes the same one that is ADAMANT that we name the baby Olivia) suggested we wait and see if the baby has a lot of hair and we name her rapunzel. The kicker is she means wait till she is 2 or 3 years old, until then we will just call her baby girl! LOL!!!!

  1. Ok, the last part about rapunzel has me in stitches! That is hilarious! I really liked the name Vivian, which I think it older, but wanted to call her Vivi, but couldn't get hubby to agree (there's always next time right???). We are only 17 days apart! Picking a name is sooo hard and then you have the added stress of the kids opinions. I like all of those names, but you're right Hannah, Emma, and Olivia are all very popular (I'm not a popular name person, like unique, probably b/c I'm a Deni). I was the same though and wanted a name to call her besides baby girl!! And I wanted to be able to make things with her name! Fun fun! I know whatever you pick out it will be perfect!!! Enjoy it all!

  2. My oldest daughter's name is Olivia, and we call her Livi, so I'm pretty partial to it. lol One of my BFF's sons is named Harrison. Cute name. In the end, you have to go with one that you and hubby like. Your daughter will eventually leave it alone and go along with the name that you've chosen. :)

  4. Like you, I don't like names that are overly common. Yet, I don't like names that are really odd sounding either! Makes choosing names difficult.

  5. I don't know what it is, but it seems like girl's names are so much harder. Rob and I can't agree on anything right now, but we have some time left before we know the gender. I guess you'll just know when it's right. You can always have 2 picked out and wait to name her when you see her.
